HYROX for Women Over 40

HYROX for Women Over 40: Everything I Wish I'd Known Before Starting

If you’re a woman over 40 and HYROX has caught your attention, you might be wondering:

Am I actually ready for this?

Maybe you’ve been strength training for years. Maybe you’re a runner. Maybe you used to feel incredibly fit and somewhere along the way your body started requiring a little more patience.

Or maybe you’re looking at HYROX and thinking, That looks completely insane.

I get it.

But one of the things I love about HYROX is that it gives you something very specific to train for. You don't have to become “a HYROX athlete” overnight. You simply need to start building the skills and capacity required for the race.

And for women over 40, I think there’s a smarter way to approach that process.

You Don't Need to Be an Elite Athlete

HYROX combines running with functional workout stations. The standard race format includes eight 1-kilometer runs and eight workout stations.

That means you need both endurance and strength.

But it doesn't mean you need to be amazing at either one before you begin.

You can build both.

That's actually the beauty of training for a specific event: you have a roadmap.

Instead of randomly adding more workouts, more miles, or more intensity, you can train the things that will actually help you on race day.

Your Body Isn't the Same at 25—and That's Not a Bad Thing

This is something I wish more women heard.

Getting older doesn't mean you can't get stronger, faster, or more capable.

It does mean you may need to pay more attention to how you recover.

Sleep matters.

Fueling matters.

Stress matters.

Strength training matters.

And sometimes the best training decision is knowing when to back off rather than forcing another hard workout because your plan says you should.

I don't believe in training against your body.

I believe in learning how to work with it.

Strength Is Your Friend

If you're preparing for HYROX in your 40s, strength training should be part of the conversation.

You're going to encounter movements that ask you to push, pull, carry, lunge, squat, jump and work under fatigue.

You don't need to be the strongest person in the gym.

You need to develop enough strength to perform those movements efficiently and confidently.

And that's very different.

Running Still Matters

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that HYROX is primarily a strength event.

It isn't.

Half of the race distance is running: eight 1-kilometer segments totaling 8 kilometers.

But here's the catch:

You're not running those kilometers in isolation.

You're running after sled work, burpees, rowing, carries, lunges and wall balls.

So HYROX training isn't simply about becoming a better runner.

It's about learning to run when you're already working.

That distinction matters.

You Don't Have to Train Harder. You Have to Train Smarter.

This might be the biggest lesson I've learned.

More isn't automatically better.

If you're already balancing work, family, relationships, stress, sleep and all the other pieces of adult life, adding six or seven brutal workouts to your week isn't necessarily the answer.

A smart training plan gives you enough stimulus to improve while leaving room for recovery.

That's particularly important in midlife.

You want to arrive at race day feeling prepared—not completely depleted.

HYROX Can Be a Midlife Goal

And maybe that's actually the best part.

You don't have to train for HYROX because you need to prove something about your age.

You can train for it because it's fun.

Because it's challenging.

Because you want to see what your body can do.

Because you've spent enough years taking care of everyone else and you're ready to put a goal on the calendar that's just for you.

That's the part I really love.

You're not too old.

You just need a plan that meets you where you are.

Ready to Train for HYROX?

That's exactly why I created the HYROX Training Collective.

It's designed for women who want to prepare for HYROX with structure, strength, endurance, recovery and real-life sustainability in mind.

You don't have to figure it all out yourself.
